Down and up and down, and then up and down and up. We will hike out and back on the Backbone Trail from Latigo Canyon, across Castro Crest and descending into Upper Solstice Canyon. 2.7miles out, 2.7 miles back. Elevation gain is about or under 1050 ft. Trail is single track almost all the way.
We’re starting high, dipping down, then rising again from Latigo to Castro Crest for broad views of mountains and canyons. The descent from Castro Crest is the standard chaparral-blanketed fare we’re accustomed to in this area. The floor of Upper Solstice will be our turnaround point.
This hike is about 5.5 miles round trip with about 1050’ gain.
