BACKPACKING LEADERSHIP: For Advanced Backpackers

This is a leadership course designed with the intent to grow SDB members into SDB trip leaders. You must be an advanced backpacker to participate in this course.

This course will take place throughout the Summer as different milestones are achieved. The goal of this course is to encourage growth in leadership and enhance backpacking skills that are necessary to lead trips for SDB.

About Me:
I am not a professional guide or backpacking instructor.
I’ve been backpacking since 2017 and joined San Diego Backpackers in 2020. I lead out-of-state adventures and beginner’s trips for the group.

Goal:
To produce leaders for SDB that are willing to host trips/events in their own style/interest.

Objectives:
During this course we will meet the following milestones in theory and/or execution…

๐ŸŒผ Practicing damage control
๐ŸŒผ Trip planning
๐ŸŒผ Obtaining permits
๐ŸŒผ Developing routes, using GPS, and navigating
๐ŸŒผ Using a personal locator beacon / SOS device
๐ŸŒผ Basic first-aid
๐ŸŒผ Responding to unplanned scenarios
๐ŸŒผ Using Meetup to host a trip
๐ŸŒผ Selecting trip participants based on trip difficulty
๐ŸŒผ Plan and lead a trip

Pre-requisites:
If you do not already possess a California Campfire Permit, please obtain one before the start of this course.

Trail statistics are approximate. For safety purposes always assume they are underestimated. But donโ€™t be disappointed if they are overestimated. Bring more water and snacks than you think youโ€™ll need.

Trail descriptions are based on previous hikes. Current conditions are unknown until arrival. Expect the unexpected and plan accordingly.
